The Ha-ma-yas Guardians of the Nanwakolas member First Nations are on the frontline of emergency response in the event of a marine disaster in the territories, whether it is a small recreational vessel catching fire in a marina or a large diesel truck falling off a barge. The Guardians lead the implementation of the Nations’ Geographic Response Strategies, including ensuring that important cultural and ecological sites are protected from harm. That requires training, equipment, and of course, the Guardians’ vital local knowledge.
