
Nanwakolas member First Nations have been developing Geographic Response Strategies to protect areas with cultural, food gathering, conservation and economic significance within their territories from the impacts of marine spills and pollution, especially incidents involving oil or chemicals. In the summer of 2021, partnering with the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, the Nations’ Guardians began exercising these protection strategies. Through collaboration and information sharing, there is and improved understanding of what needs protection and why, and what equipment and training is needed for Nations to fulfill their responsibilities to protect these important places.
