INDIGENOUS STEWARDSHIP COORDINATOR POSITION

General Description:

The Nanwakolas Council is seeking an Indigenous Stewardship Coordinator to join our Ha-ma-yas Stewardship Network team. This is a contract position (approx. 35hrs per week) beginning March 2026 and continues until March 31, 2027. The Indigenous Stewardship Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the development of the Nanwakolas Council member Nations’ Guardians capacity. The Indigenous Stewardship Coordinator will report to the Nanwakolas Ha-ma-yas Stewardship Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Ha-ma-yas Stewardship team to implement the Nations’ Stewardship vision(s),
  • Initiate discussions with post-secondary institutions to develop and support delivery of a Stewardship Technician Training Program for a new cohort of Guardians,
  • Review and implement approved recommendations for a “Master” Guardian program,
  • Seek funding opportunities that support the Nations’ priorities related to stewardship,
  • Work with partners to enhance Nation building through Guardian activities,
  • Facilitate Indigenous-led Guardian projects,
  • Assist Nanwakolas Council Program Leads to ensure completion of Guardian work on Nanwakolas projects,
  • Preparing for and assisting with the spring and winter Guardian gatherings,
  • Work with Knowledge Holders to incorporate Indigenous science into Guardian work,
  • Support Nanwakolas personnel in providing cultural awareness training to partners.

Ideal Candidate:

  • A strong communicator with the ability to work collaboratively in large and in small groups,
  • Organized and personable, with the ability to listen and be creative when it comes to problem solving,
  • Resides within Kwakwaka’wakw and/or Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ territory and has access to your own transportation,
  • Indigenous, and knows about Kwak̓wala/ Lik̓ʷala/K’ómoks languages,
  • A broad understanding of resource and environmental management in a First Nations context,
  • Post-secondary education and clear understanding of First Nation Guardian programs,
  • Experience in working with First Nations and/or direct related experience.
